#099: Pamela Brown (Leo Kottke 1977)

I love Leo Kottke, and have seen him perform many times. He’s got a dry quirky sense of humor, and sometimes the stories go off on some very odd tangents. His guitar style is unique and awesome. Leo only has a handful of songs with vocals (perhaps for good reason), but Pamela Brown is one of my all time favorites.

Leo Kottke (born 11 September 1945, Athens, Georgia, U.S.) is an acoustic guitarist. He is widely known for his innovative fingerpicking style, which draws on influences from blues, jazz, and folk music, and his syncopated, polyphonic melodies. Kottke has overcome a series of personal obstacles including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his hand to emerge as a widely-recognized master of his instrument.
Focusing primarily on instrumental composition and playing, Kottke has sporadically moved in a vocal direction, singing in an unconventional yet expressive baritone famously self-described as sounding like “geese farts on a muggy day”. In concert, Kottke intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career, played solo on his signature 6- and 12-string guitars.

#098: Duet (Bela Fleck & Toumani Diabante)

A rainy day. A semi-lazy day. For what ever reason, seems like it’s finally time to get back into the Live Things project. To get things started again, here’s a track from two virtuoso’s from different cultures: Bela Fleck (banjo) and Toumani Diabante (kora). Both instruments have a very different sound, yet have the same sort of tonal qualities. They really sound beautiful together.

Well that’s one thing simplified. The Visual Feed had been hosted on this site, and frankly it was too much of a pain. So now it’s on Flickr.

I seem to have settled into a different sort of calendar year, one that starts and ends in late July – early August. In other words, in sync with the Gathering of the Vibes. I haven’t updated this site since the “New Year” started, and now that it’s the middle of September, I suppose it’s time.

With every new cycle is an opportunity to reevaluate things. I had a few projects going, and although I’ll start them up again, I’m in the mood to tweak them. Here’s the current status of each of the dzPlanet projects:

The Live Things Podcast: I had fun with this, as it gave me a great excuse to look through and listen to terabytes of live shows otherwise gathering dust. For quite a while I was able to keep up a pace of a post every other day. Then in preparation for the Gathering of the Vibes, I went to an every day schedule. And since the Vibes – nada. I think I’ll start this one up again, but go for a once a week schedule. I would also like to offer a way to play the tracks more conveniently, more like a radio station, so look for that going forward. I’ll also try linking it up to the dzPlanet Live Music Archives (see below). Live Things page will very likely be completely overhauled.

The Visual Feed: This was also a lot of fun, but in the end I was having problems hosting the images. There’s a whole long story associated with my never ending quest to figure out the ultimate solution to photo hosting. I think I’ll blog about it later, since I’m sure I’m not the only one out there in Self hosted vs. Flickr vs. Smugmug vs. Zenfolio vs. Picassa hell. So I’ll pick this one up again after I figure what to do.

dzPlanet Live Music Archives: This actually was started shortly after the Vibes as a way of sharing recordings of all the vibe sets with friends and the folks on the GOTV message boards. It was very well received, so I’ll definitely be keeping this project going. The only issue here is that the script I’m using is a bit obsolete and is hard to integrate correctly with the rest of this site. I’m currently using Andromeda and although it works OK, it has not been updated in a long time. I also tried Zina and the version I was using had great features but too many bugs. But regardless, I’ll be doing something with this.

Silent Movies: I still watch silent movies all the time, and for a while I thought I’d have the time to review them. Let’s face it – it’s not happening. So instead, I’ll probably start a sort of checklist of movies I’ve seen with useful links.

The Salisbury Project: I’m still planning on doing more here, as I really enjoy finding the nooks and crannies of my home town. Fall is coming, and it might be time to do a fall photo tour.

And so the “new year” begins…
